RACING NEWS

ADAMS MEMORIAL HISTORY of the race FARE BADLY BY ABAYDOS Ope 0* features of the Auckland Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting on Saturday week will be the contest for tho: Adams Memorial Handicap. Next to the Trotting Cup run at the summer carnival, this is the_most popular race staged at Epsom. Since the race was instituted in 1919 some high-class pacers have won, including Harold Logan, Peter Pirate, Worthy Light, De Soto, Kelpie's Triumph. Our McKinney, Ironside, Ue'iniku, Bold Venture and Josedale Grattan. Harold Logan rose to the highest plane, ♦ikine a two-mile world's record of 4.12 2-5. josedale G rattan, winner of tho last New Zealand Trotting Cup in the record time of 4?15. has also reached the top grade. ' Outsiders Score . The outstanding feature of the contest is the failure of favourites, only five, Harold Logan, WorthyLLightt t Ironside, Uonuku and Josedale Grattan, being successful. It was ■lot until Harold Logan won in 1930 that the run of iong-priced winners was checked. Outsiders to score' prior to this were Uncle Bert, Ballin, Jewel, Goldman, Taipare and Heremai, Uncle Bert's dividend being the largest in the history of the race. Ngingongingo, Peter Pirate and Kewpie's Triumph were at good prices in tho t-hreo succeeding years, and in 1934 Worthy Light 'scored. Favourites failed in the next three contests, Our McKinney. winner in 1937, being little fancied. Our McKinney is the back-marker in the coming contest. F. J. Smith's Record Ironside stopped the rout by scoring the following season.- He attempted to add the G :F. Mark Memorial Handicap to his list, bat was narrowly beaten by Crocus, with jfervie's Last third, and _ tne three being bracketed gave F. J. Smith an interesting record. Uenuku was successful in 1939, going 4.39, a record for tho race when run at two miles. Smith made a great effort to win in 1940 with Josedale Grattan. going under by a narrow margin to' the consistent Bold Venture. Josedale Grattan turned the tables on Bold Venture in the C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap and last year won the Adams Memorial Handicap in 3.14 3-5, a race record gt" the mile and a-half. When Peter Pirate scored, he also won the C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap, Liverpool Handicap and was third in the Cornwall Handicap. For a number of years the race was ran in June, the track always being heavv. The • slowest time for two miles, 6.17 2-5, stands to Reremai, dam of Rockfel. Early Fancies There is every indication of a high-class eontest being witnessed this year. There is no outstanding performer, but good form has been disclosed by Our McKinney. Hillcrest, Eete Kura, Cyone Girl, Proletarian. Bronze Queen, Munga Tangi, Kewpie's Queen and Channel Fleet. Two who have recently made the grade are Davey Day and Coleen Travis and their presence should give added interest. Both pacers have won this season in attractive fashion. Davey Day scored in the NewYear Handicap at Epsom in December, and in February won the Railway Handicap in 4.23 3-5 off 4.38. Coleen Travis, at Methven, ran 2.43 4-5 to win the Mount Harding Handicap off 3.1, and was successful in The Levels Handicap at Timaru in 2.46 3-5 off C.S2. She won at Forbury Park in heavv ground and can' evidently handle any kind of track. Davey Day and Coleen Travis will be the early favourites.
