DEFENCE WORK ORDER
THE POSITION OF DRIVERS An interpretation of aspects of the Defence Works Labour Legislation buspension Order as it applies to drivers has been supplied to the Auckland Drivers' Union by the Commissioner ot Defence Construction, Mr- J *}mes Fletcher. Four main topics are dealt with, as follows: Hours ot Work.—These are o4 a week, worked on six days of nine hours each. No employer can call upon a man to work /beyond these hours without the consent of the Public Works engineer that it is absolutely essential for these hours to be worked. Payment.—When a firm is engaged substantially on defence works, the rates of wages shall be set out in the Defence Works Labour Legislation buspension Order. 1942, namely,, nine hours at a flat rate of wages. If in the cartage to of metals, tho number of trips to be made is such that one hour has to be filled in, that hour will be paid at the flat rate. Speed.—With regard to the question of excessive speed, particularly on the return trips, which is being indulged in bv certain firms' transport, this matter has already been dealt with, and I have warned the firm in question that they are not in any circumstances to evade the law by travelling at excessive rates ° f llinimtim Wage.—With regard to the minimum wage, any time lost cannot be made up beyond the limit or six days prescribed in the Act. Any hours worked on Sunday must be paid for entirelv separate from the hours prescribed" in the 54-hour week —that is, six days of nine hours.
