NAVY AND FLEET AIR ARM NEW ZEALAND CANDIDATES (Special Correspondent) LONDON, April 7 The following have been granted temporary commissions:—R.N.Z.N.V.R.; Sub-Lieutenants —E. F. Penty, Wairoa; H. A. Nation, Waipawa; W. 0. Mapplebeck, Christchurch; D. N. McCallum and G. M. Broad, Dunedin; A. G. Grimnon, G. T. McCarthy, W. J. D. Minogue, Auckland; H. M. Buchanan, Mataura; It. L. Sowden, F. S. Phillips, Gisborne; G. Anderson, '0 Invercargill; also M. R. Carter. The following temporary commissions have been granted in the Fleet Air Arm: —Sub-Lieutenants (A): B. W. Nichols, W. D. Squire, R. V. BellBooth, G. W. J. Blacker, W. G. Coleman, G. D. Cook, R. A. Cranwell, D. Dorinac, A. N. Eton, M. C. Farrer, J. A. Gledhill, J. G. Hale, R-. A. Hirl schorn, R. Hooker, S. T. Jenkins, L.. H. Johnson, J. W. Johnston, N. Laurence, D. D. Lightbourne, R. Mander, J. S. Mclvor, K. McMillan, C. G. Patrick, K. F. B. Petrie, M. H. J. Petrie, A. T. Raines, R. H. Saunders, R. M. Shaw, J. E. D. Stringleman, J. D. Chittenden, "E. S. Erikson. Lieutenant C. G. Palmer, R.N.Z. N.V.R., Auckland, was recently promoted lieutenant-commander, making a total of 17 New Zealand lieutenantcommanders. New Zealand has thus the highest percentage of lieutenant-com-manders now serving in the R.N.V.R. from any Empire country. Lieutenant-Commander B. T. Giles, Wellington, is one of the outstanding members of the R.N.Z.N.V.R. He was promoted after only two years as lieutenant instead of the normal four years. He was thus honoured because he carried out a special service.
