ADDITIONAL DAY

TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES RATE OF TIME AND HALF (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Monday A modification of the award and industrial agreements under which tramway employees are working is provided for in an order issued under the Labour Legislation Emergency Regulations, 1940. The Minister of Labour, the' Hon. P. C. Webb, said to-day that this had been done to enable the tramway authorities throughout New Zealand to work their men an additional day in each week in cases where this was found necessary because of the shortage of staff caused by the calling up of men for service with the armed forces. "Workers who are called, back to work an additional day are to be given a minimum of eight hours' work." said Mr. Webb, "and payment for all work done on the additional day is to be at the rate of time and a-half, but in all other respects the conditions of» the award or industrial - agreement concerned will apply. Sunday is not, to be regarded as an additional day for the purpose of the order." The Minister said the order was the result of a conference between representatives of the tramway authorities and the New Zealand Tramway Employees' TJnion over which the Minister of Public Works,, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, had presided.
