COST OF SHELTERS

OTAHUHU OBJECTIONS Objections to ,the principle of the outer suburban local bodies being required to contribute to the cost of constructing air raid shelters in Auckland at an estimated cost of £120,000 were expressed at the Otahuhu Borough Council meeting last night. Mr. F. W. Grey said the local bodies would be required to find about £70,000 for this scheme. He asked whether the council had been consulted.

The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., said it was proposed to make the Auckland tunnel scheme part of the future traffic system, which would be a distinct asset to the city. He questioned whether outside local bodies should be asked to pay toward that. It was decided to ask the combined local bodies to discuss the position.
