LOCAL AND GENERAL

Secondary Schools Reopening Three Auckland secondary schools will reopen this week. The first term begins at King's College to-day, and the Diocesan High School will reopen to-morrow. At St. Cuthbert's College, the first term will commence on Thursday. In each case, boarders arrive a day earliet.

Bread Deliveries Zoned

Commencing yesterday, the Otahuhu, Papatoetoe and Mangere districts and the greater part of the Remuera and Ellerslie areas were zoned for bread deliveries. Further areas will be brought under the zoning scheme as from next Monday. The regulation of the deliveries will mean a considerable saving in petrol with little inconvenience to the public. Transport Privileges

An application for the extension of the same privileges on tramears to members of the Red Cross Transport Corps as are granted to members of the armed forces, was declined by the Auckland Transport Board yesterday. In a letter from the secretary of the Red Cross Society, it was stated that as the organisation was a voluntary one some concession would be appreciated. The board decided that as this case had no special qualification to recommend it, no action should be taken.

Bicycles Impressed" The opinion that more bicycles should be used by school children living in Orakei and the eastern suburbs was expressed by Mrs. M. M. Dreaver at yesterday's meeting of the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, when the question of an increased allowance of petrol for a bus company was being discussed. "I used to ride 17 miles before breakfast," she said. Replying to her question why more children were not encouraged to use bicycles, Mr. Martin Smith said: "I am afraid that a large number of boys' bicycles have been impressed lately to get father to work."

Model Ships Painstaking workmanship by the young builders is a feature of a display of 28 models illustrating the development of ships which has been presented to the War Memorial Museum school service by the Pupils of the Takahue school, Kaitaia. Made by children whose ages ranged from 8J to 13J, the models begin with the most primitive types and follow the history of shipbuilding up to the present day, represented by the Queen Mary. This model, built like the others under the direction of the headmaster, Mr. C. A. Watson, was the work of four children, the eldest of whom was just over 10 years of age.

Rent for Training College A suggestion that the question of the rent to be paid for the use of the Auckland Teachers' Training College as an auxiliary hospital should bo referred to an arbitrator was received by the Auckland Hospital Board from the Auckland Education Board last night. The latter acknowledged receipt of a letter from the Hospital Board declining to pay £SO a week and nominated a city accountant as arbitrator. After several members had expressed opposition to the appointment of a single arbitrator nominated by the Education Board, the Hospital Board referred the matter to its Finance Committee with power to act. Wharl Guards Tested

The experience of a country member of the Lyttelton Harbour Board in testing the efficacy of the guard on the wharves enlivened a debate on wharf protection at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The member, Mr. J. K. McAlpine, contended that 100 men would be needed to patrol the wharves with absolute efficiency against determined saboteurs. "About a year ago I came down to/the port on a board meeting day by an early train," said Mr. McAlpine. "I carried an empty suitcase and I wandered about on the wharves and even on to ships, and nobody stopped me. Yet I am not known in Lyttelton. That suitcase might have been full of bombs."
