AUCKLAND WINS

CUP CRICKET MATCH MARGIN OF EIGHT WICKETS The three-day cricket match for the Centennial Cup between the Auckland and Wellington representative teams at Eden Park ended yesterday in a win for Auckland by eight wickets. Wellington, which followed on, had scored 14 runs without the loss of a wicket in its second innings on Saturday evening and the score was taken to 2SG yesterday. This trave Auckland 125 to get in an hour and a-half for an outright win and the runs were obtained for the loss of two wickets and with 13 minutes to spare. The weather was fine apart from a heavy shower shortly after 3 p.m. It drove the players to the pavilion and the tea adjournment was then taken. There was only a moderate attendance. Menzies again top-scored for Wellington with 76 runs As in the first innings he was unable to take chances as the wickets kept falling at the other end. In spite of this defensive situation, however, Menzies varied straight and cover drives with late cuts down the gully and it was only a well-placed field that kept his total down. It was a good double for the Canterbury and New Zealand representative. The not out batsmen, Mooney and Osborn, took the total to 47 before the former played a ball on to his wicket. Three runs later Osborn was run out on his own call for a short run when the ball went straight to<Sa fieldsman. O'Brien batted most attractively for his 42 He never failed to score off anything calling for punishment. He was dismissed by a well-judged catch near the sight Screen by Ellis. Duffy batted under difficulties, having injured his right wrist. McCarthy and Wilson both attacked the bowling and they were nicely set when caught behind the wicket Wilson off a weak snick and McCarthy through swinging at a ball well off the wicket. Riddolls and Andrews were defying the attack when the Wellington captain sportingly sent out word to the batsmen to force the pace and both sacrificed their wickets. Ellis and Walters looked like knocking off the runs required bv Auckland for an outright win, but at 03 Walters was smartly stumped. He had made some pretty coyer drives and leg glances. Ellis again batted verv confidently and took risks in the early stages He made most of his runs in front of the wicket and was eventually caught in the outfield. Wallace, who assisted Cooper to get the runs, was dropped in the ontneld by O'Brien off Allen. The fielding of both sides was good and the bowling steady, without being hostile. Nottman again headed the Auckland averages. Kerr would have improved his figures had he held two hard returns. The first one WP-S high, however, and by a full-length dive he jusi grot his hands to the other. Hamson's first wicket was obtained through a foolish shot, while Menzies later failed to hit the ball properly in attempting a straight drive. Garrard bowled under difficulties, having strained his side on Saturday. It was an interesting game, played in fine sporting spirit. Scores: — AUCKLAND First Innings . • • • • • 469 Second timings N.
