MIDHIRST OIL BORE
OPERATIONS TO CEASE DEEPEST IN NEW ZEALAND (0.c.) '' NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday Rumours having been circulated in the Stratford district that the New Zealand Petroleum Company's Midhirst bore was to he abandoned, and operations in that 'ocality suspended, the matter was referred to the general * manager of the company, Mr J. G. Stout, at Gisborne. He replied: "A\e are quitting at Midhirst." Mr. Stout declined to say when or , where the machinery might be removed . after the plant at Midhirst was dis- * mantled. Moturoa has been mentioned as the next scene of activity. Midhirst was chosen for the sinking of the initial bore in the revived search for oil in Taranaki by the New Zealand Petroleum Company. It was the third site to be abandoned by the company in New Zealand, the other two being at Naatapa and Morere. in the Gisborne district.. Drilling at Midhirst started on. June 13, 1940. The bore was practically 31.000 ft; deep, or about 5000 ft. deeper than any other bore ever drilled in the Dominion. *
