WHANGAREI HIGH SCHOOL

NEW BLOCK NEARLY READY (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Saturday In spite of the fact that 16 class rooms and two laboratories at the Whangarei High School have been taken over for the establishment of an emergency hospital, the usual school activities will be carried out. A recent appeal to residents to accommodate boys who would normally have boarded at the school has resulted in offers to take 57 boys. The new two-storeyed block of six class rooms and two laboratories will be ready for occupation in a short time and will accommodate the secondary department of the girls' school. The intermediate department will use six halls adjacent to each other near the centre of the town. A feature of the new buildings is the domestic .science laboratory, which is equipped with five ranges, gas, electric and coal. Adjoining it is an independent unit, fitted with an electric stove, and completely equipped as a kitchen and servery. Each class room is spacious, well lit, and fitted with windows which fold back to leave an opening almost the whole length of the room. A sick room, properly equipped, is another asset. An electric boiler provides steam heating for the block. On the other side of the school grounds is the new hostel for girls. Shortage of labour has delayed its completion. It will accommodate 80 boarders.
