——♦ NATIONAL SUCCESSES HAURAKI CONTEST BIG MARGIN IN SMALL POLL (0.C.) MORRINBVILLE, Sunday The by-election tor the Hauraki seat in the House of Representatives was held yesterday and resulted in the return of the National Party's candidate, Mr. A. S. Sutherland, of Ngaruawahia, by a large majority over his only opponent, Mr. H. T. Head, of Parnell, an Independent returned soldiers' candidate. There was only a fairly small poll. The prelim i nary count was: Mr Sutherland . . . . 3639 Mr Head 1043 Informal 32 Majority for Sutherland 2596 The Hauraki by -elect ion was caused through the death in action of Lieu-tenant-Colonel J. M. Allen, who won the seat at the 1938 general election from Mr. R. Coulter, then the sitting Labour member. The official count was:—Allen, 5291; Coulter, 410.5; informal, 97; majority for Mr. Allen, 1188 Total votes cast in 1938 were 9491, against 4714 yesterday. Mr. Sutherland contested the Haglan seat in 1938, reducing the majority of the Hon. \V. Lee Martin, then Minister of Agriculture, by over 10(10 votes. He has been a member of the Waikato Central Rural Credits Board for 10 years ami is deputy-chair man of the Auckland Harbour Board. He farmed a property at Te Akatea until 1939. THE TEMUKA SEAT MR. ACLAND RETURNED (0.C.) TEMUKA. Sunday In a much smaller poll than in 1938. the National Party's candidate, Mr. J. Acland, was returned to Parliament at yesterday's by-election for the Temuka seat, left vacant by the recent death of the sitting National member, Mr. T. D. Burnett. Mr. Acland's only opponent was .Mr. D. C. Davie, an Independent. The preliminary count was: Mr. Acland 4142 Mr. Davie 1516 Majority tor Mr. Acland 2626 In 19.18 Mr. Burnett defeated Mr. J. A. Kearton (Labour), bv 5494 votes to 1245.
