MISS SOPHIA GINGER Miss Sophia Ginger, of Hawera, celebrated her 103 rd birthday on Saturday. She is probably one of the most remarkable women centenarians in the Dominion, for she enjoys good health and eyesight, and, but for difficulties with her hearing, is able to carry on a normal life. She enjoys frequent games of cards and rarely retires before 10 p.m. Born in England, she came to New Zealand at the age of 10. landing at New Plymouth in a surf boat from the sbip Joseph Bletcher. Among her most precious possessions is the cable message of congratulations from the King and Queen which she received on her 100 th birthday. SOCIAL NEWS Lady Myers, of Wellington, and Mrs. Maurice Myers, of Dunedin, are at the Grand Hotel. „ Mrs. It. J. Bartle, Orakei Road, Remuera, will return to-day from a holiday at Takapuna. Mrs. A. S. Miller, Brett Avenue, Takapuna, returned last evening from a visit to Mrs. F. W. Wilson at Waiheke. Mrs. Ralph Worley, Arney Road, Remuera, and Miss Felecia Worley returned at the week-end from a holiday at Rotorua. Miss N. Self, assistant commandant of the Auckland Red Cross Transport Corps, will return this morning from Palmerston North. Mrs. Gordon Dransfield and Miss May Dransfield returned to Victoria Avenue, Remuera, yesterday after a holiday at Takapuna. Mrs. Rodger Scott, of Dunedin, who lias been visiting Miss Shirley Wish at Takapuna, has left to visit her aunt, Mrs. White, at Whakatane. Mrs. J. A Watson, St. Stephen's Av.enue, Parnell, who has been spending several weeks at her cottage at Ohau Channel, Rotorua, has returned home Mrs. John Hill, Orakei Road, Remuera, who has been visiting her sister-in-law, Mrs. J. A. Watson, at Ohau Channel, Rotorua, returned home on Saturday. ENGAGEMENTS Harris—Patterson. —The engagement Is announced between Bernard Sydney, second eon of Mr. and Mrs, L.
