EGG MARKETING

Sir,—l wonder if the public will stand the latest demand of the egg merchants, made to the Government, that all eggs produced should be sold through them, so that they can make profit on re-sale to retailers? How much more of this kind of. regimentation are we to put up with? G. Sir, —As a registered poultry-keeper and holder of a producer's license to market eggs in the Auckland egg marketing area, permit me' space to put forward another point of view in reference to egg distribution and anomalies appearing in the Hebald of January 29. That there are anomaties no one who knows the full facts of the case will doubt. If the Auckland Egg Marketing Committee has its way all the eggs produced will have to be marketed through the licensed distributors whose profits will be substantially increased by their 10 per cent commission and ours as producers who market direct will be proportionally reduced. The admission that producer's benzine had been restricted and yet had not brought about the desired monopoly control is also of interest as it gives a reasonable explanation- why my petrol has jeen cut to a gallon a month, while neighbouring, farmers who do not supply direct to consumer and retailer have been left with three, four and even nine gallons a month for private use. If monopoly control is required by the Government in the' rationing of e gg and the situation has been brought about by the war, I, as a producer. would be in full support of it, but why is it necessary to increase, at our expense, the' profits of the wholesale distributors? I. L. Barb.
