KILLED IN ACTION FOUR GUNNERS INCLUDED SOLDIERS IN MIDDLE EAST Previously posted missing and now reported killed in action, Captain Henry Roy Hume was the husband of Mrs. Hume, of 13 St. George's Bay Road, Auckland. Born in Auckland 38 years ago lie was educated at Auckland Grammar School. He was a member of the Auckland Yacht Squadron a'nd was at one time the owner of the yacht Thelma. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. M Hume, live in Eipling Avenue, Epsom. Gunner Ernest John Warner, of Ellerslie, who has been killed in action, was a former Auckland athlete. He was a son of the late Mr. A. E. Warner, a well-known steeplechase rider, who was killed at a meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club in 1929. Gunner Warner held the mile walk championship of the Ellerslie Athletic Club and was a member of the Ellerslie United League Football Club's fifth grade team which won the 1939 knock-out competition. While in Egypt he represented his regiment at the Second N.Z.E.F. sports at the Prince Farouk Stadium in Cairo last August. He took part in the feathef-weight boxing competition, the mile run and the mile walk. His death occurred the day before his 22nd birthday. a group of New Zealanders who made an adventurous escape from Greece to Crete in a small boat at the time of the evacuation from Greece. Gunner Snelling was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Snelling and a grandson of the late Mr. Thomas L. Macky. He was born in Auckland 23 3 r ears ago and was educated at Cambridge School and*, Hamilton High School. When the New Zoalanders m Greece had to retreat Gunner Snelling and 10 others commandeered a small sailing vessel, filled it with stores, and escaped to sea under the noses of the Germans who had entered the town For eight days they sailed in the open sea, at times being becalmed and at other periods striking heavy storms which threatened to swamp the boat. They eventually reached Crete and later returned to Egypt. Gunner Adrian Jackson Kelly, who has been killed in action, was the husband of Mrs. R. Kelly, of 32 Cromwell Road, Mount Eden. His mother. Mrs. M. E. Kelly, lives at 147 Grafton Road. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School and took a keen interest in Rugby football. Killed in action in rhe Middle East. Gunner Allan Warden Pugh was the only son of Mr. G Pugh, of Mount Eden He was 24 years of age and was educated at Mount Albert Grammar School. After enlisting at the outbreak of war lie served in a coastal defence unit before be left with the N.Z.E.I'• He served in Greece and Crete. ner Pugh was a member of the Grafton Football Club and was the Auckland B grade table tennis champion in 1936 and an Auckland representative from 1937 to 1939
