LABOURERS' AWARD

PAYMENT FOR HOLIDAYS A new award for the New Zealand Builders' Labourers, Quarry Workers. Tunnellers and General Labourers' Union, which came into operation on December 22, provides that general labourers now come within the provisions of the Factories' Act, and will be paid for statutory holidays. The holidays to be "laid for are New Year's Day, Good FrUay, Easter Monday, Ansae Day, Labi tr Day, the Kingßirthday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It is also stipulated that any worker who has been employed w; hin 14 days of the date of the award, December 22, and has since left his emi-'oymcnt, will have to be paid for any holiday in the period. About .'SOOU workers in Auckland are stated to be affected by the award, which will be operative for two years. The award makes no provision for a general increase in wages, beyond enlarging the classification of the workers. Higher pay is granted for shifts on tunnelling work, while quarry workers have a wider scope, extra pay being granted to certain sections doing specialised work. Increased wages for the erection of scaffolding are made to apply to the dismantling also. The award narrows the scope of suburban work, defining the areas with a consequent effect upon travelling time to and lrom work.
