AWARD ANOMALIES

BOROUGH COUNCIL STAFF The anomaly that under the various awards it was possible for a casual worker under unemployment relief schemes to receive higher wages than some of the permanent staff was brought to the notice of the Otahuhu Borough Council by the Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P. It was mentioned when a report by the Works Committee recommended that one of the permanent staff receive an increase in wages. The Mayor said that under the awards for payment of relief workers a man employed as a motor-driver and on casual tarring work could receive more than permanent employees. "Awards are very difficult to follow these days," he added. In adopting the report, members suggested that the Finance Committee review the cases of other permanent hands.
