CRICKET SEASON

ONE-DAY FIXTURES QUESTION OF BATTING TIME MANAGERS FOR TOURS. SOUTH Mr. E. E. Nalder, who presided over last night's meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Cricket Association in the absence of Mr. W. E. Fee, said that after witnessing several one-day games he had- left the ground unimpressed by what he termed uninspiring displays. In seeking th'S cause for this he had comS to the conclusion that it was not the scheme but the players who were at fault, and he felt that if they cocSd set over the two-day complex brighter cricket which was expected from the oae-day schema would eventuate. * Other speakers referred to the?, fact that teams having first use of the wicket had batted until after 4 p.m. and thereby almost forcing their opponents to play for a draw or deliberately throw wickets away, ..Mr. H. T. Pearson expressed the opinion that if the opening team was compelled - to declare not later than 4 p.m. a brighter and keener atmosphere would be in evidence. Other opinions were that there were young players who needed time to settle down. The qugstiou of a team leaving the field before the official time of drawing stumps after a decision had been Teached was discussed, and it was agreed that if there was no possibility of further points being gained it was a matter of mutual consent between the captains, there being no rule to compel the teams to continue once a decision had been reached. The umpires' association delegate stated that the Grosvenor Cup committee suggested that, instead of 40 points per month being alioted under the one-day scheme of play. 40 points per match would assist the committee. This was agreed' to. The secretary, Mr. E. J. Price, stated that he had circularised the minor associations asking for entries for the provincial tourney and country week tourney to be held in Auckland at Christmas time. This action was endorsed. Mr. A. M. Matheson, sole selector, was appointed manager of the Auckland representative team to travel to Wellington at Christmas time, and Mr. E.. J. Price was appointed' manager of the Brabin Cup team which will play at Wellington and Christ? church during the holiday period. The Taranaki association inquired as to the possibility of the Brabin Cup team playing there against a colts' team. It was decided that this would be impossible owing to the heavy programme to which the Brabin Cup team was already committed. It was felt that the provision of a match against the colts' team which Mr. J. H. Beale is taking on tour would meet, the neeils of the Taranaki. association in this respect. The New Zealand Cricket Council inquired as to what provision was being made by the Auckland association to maintain contact between the lads who were leavinK secondary school and the clubs, the opinion being expressed that a considerable loss to cricket of promising lads was taking place at this juncture. It was agreed that Auckland' had firstclass arrangements in this respect,- and Mr. H. Duncan, who has sponsored the arrangements, was requested to acquaint the New Zealand body of what was being done. Following are the fixtures for Saturday:— First Grade.—Papakura v.
