AUCKLAND TROTS

(OUTSIDERS SUCCESSFUL waipahi takes handicap BETTING FALLS £6694/10/Goocl dividends were a feature of the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring -Meeting at Epsom on gaturday, Diamond Trust paying over two score, Royal Palm over a third of a century and Wajpahi and Katene double figures, in addition Wishful id over a quarter of a century and (Shining Link double figures for a place. Following rain in the morning, the weather tleared although there was a cold breeze. The course was slow, being yielding after the rain. The attendance was good, and the tofalisator handled £46,362, against £53,056 10s on the first Jay last year, a decrease of £660-1 10s. Xhe Waitcmata, Handicap provided a good dud over the last three furlongs between Steel King and Mac's Jimmy, the favourite, Steel King gaining the decision by a neck. Steel King'and Mac's Jimmy trotted very solidly d wf re a '"'ass above the rest, of whom the bes t was Kobie,. who ivas six lengths away third with Crovvnthorpe fourth. Although he stumbled badly while running ieiiind the leaders. Kia Ora King and Shinine Link, after going five furlongs, the second favourite, Dave Opal, won the Improvers' Handicap very easily, taking charge at the turn Dave Opal won by two and a-half lengths from Auto Bingen, who finished Liirilv Shining Link was two lengths away third a head iu front of Scottish Jewel. The favourite Eyenew, was well placed for most of the journey but failed to stay. Third Successive Win Te Koto scored his third successive victory •htn he won the Stewards' Handicap from fitareum and Davey Day. Cloverdale attempted to win all the way. but alter the fi--• nu'e and a-half in a.60 was supplanted Sv Kittv'e Choice, who jn turn was Jieaded hv Te Koto. Once in front, Te Koto had no difficulty in winning from Stargum, who fought on well- Davey Day ran on tor third, ° f Shading Eighteen Carat. Kitty s Choice, i-iio began badly, looked likely when she " n ted to the front along the back, but coU'd not maintain, the effort. \ surprise was provided an the Jellicoe Handicap Waipahi winning from Our Jewel and the little-fanded Bronze Queen. The win favourite Bing Crosby, did not have a good run but was fourth and going very strongly it the finish. Double Peter took charge early from Kewpie's Queen, leading for the first mile'in ""0 and.being still in front at the homo turn, where Waipahi, Bronze Queen and Our Jewel were close up. Double Peter tired, and Waipahi finished best to score by exciting finish in the October TTandican in which three outsiders, Diamond Tran Silk Lady and Wishful, filled the daces' with heads between them, and Cyone Girl right up fourth. The place-getters were ■ Iwavs prominent, and Diamond Trust, who had "not won since scoring in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes two seasons ago, just hung on to give H. Bryant his first winning drive Had Wishful got through near the finish she might have won. Charles Rex and Fly Across fell early, and Symphony, after being slow away, was badly checked. Otherwise she might have taken a hand in the finish. _, ~ Taking the lead from Glen Bingen three furlongs from home, Mah Jong won the Mountain Handicap decisively from Short Wave who attended her very closely throughout Bon Haven, after losing ground early through breaking, finished well to take third from Glen Bingen. who may improve with the race. Josedale Dictator failed to leave the mark and took no part in the race. Victory for Royal Palm Outsiders filled the places in the Parnell Handicap, Royal Palm winning all the way from Sir Echo and Alcazar. The favourite. Passing By, made a fine dash crossing the top but weakened near the end and was a close fourth. Moko Direct, who was on the outside of Royal Palm to the home turn, tired in the last furlong. Cavalryman lost all chance at the start, and Parrish Lad broke hadiv after going a round. Royal Palm w-as weif driven by A. J. Stow, who gained his first success as a reincman. . After Young Parry and Bedford had led into the straight in the Electric Handicap, KatenP came through to score nicely from Young Parry, with Bedford third and Munga Tangi, alwavs well placed, next. Stargum and True Guide faded after looking likely at the turn and the favourite. Club King, except for a dash across the top. was never dangerous.
