COASTGUARD WORK

HARBOUR RESCUES DRAIN ON PETROL ALLOWANCE After attending five calls to assist capsized yachts and small boats on the Auckland Harbour yesterday, the New Zealand Coastguard . Division, which expects another heavy day to-day. has only sufficient of its _ month s fuel licence left for one of its launches to make one trip to Devouport and back. The division's allowance of "2 gallons a month for rescue work and 50 for emergency was proving- hopelessly inadequate, said tlie officer commanding, Captain J. P. Eastmure, last night. Members of the division, which wa3 a purely voluntary organisation, had contributed their personal _ ? coupons yesterdav, added Captain Lastmure. Nearly "all of the emergency ration, which could be used only after the rescue ration ran out, had been used. Besides assisting yachts and taking part in harbour rescues, tne division often had ambulance calls to Waiheke and other near by islands.
