THEATRES AT CHRISTMAS

OBJECTION TO OPENING MOVE TO ALTER DECISION A request that the City Council should rescind its decision to allow picture theatres to open next Christmas Night on certain conditions was made at the council's meeting last night by a deputation from the Auckland Houses of Entertainment and Places of Amusement Employees' Union. It was reported that lor the past ten years the council bad given similar permission except when Christmas Day fell on a Sunday. The deputation stated that about onethird of the employees were estimated to wish to have Christmas Day clear. Mr. M. J. Moodabe produced signed lists showing that 199 out of 205 employees of 20 city and suburban theatres hail expressed their willingness to work. The Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, moved that the matter be deferred until next meeting in order that he might give notice of a motion to rescind the resolution. An amendment that the previous decision be adhered to was defeated by 10 votes to S and the motion was carried.
