VESSEL LAUNCHED

LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE A 50ft. motor-cruiser built for the Public Works Department was launched from the yards of W. G. Lowe and Sons, Limited, yesterday morning. Named Norman McLeod after Mr. N. J. M. McLeod, former chief mechanical engineer in the Wellington office of the Public Works Department, who recently retired after 40 years' servico, the vessel was launched by Mrs. McLeod . The Norman McLeod will be used in the Hauraki Gulf lighthouse service and for special work of the Public Works Department. Of diagonal threeskin build in heart kauri, t-lie is fitted with passenger accommodation and a hold capable of carrying 10 tons of cargo. She also has a small boat able to handle a ton of cargo and equipment for lighthouses. The vessel is fitted with a 120 horsepower I'axman Ricardo Diesel engine of English make which is expected to produce 11 knots. Her beam is 12it. (Jin. and her moulded depth sft. 6in. Her duties will be similar to those carried out bv the Matai in her quarterly surveys of lighthouses. Lately this work has been done by a small Marino Department launch which is unable to carry sufficient stores. Mr. I. Anderson, inspector of fisheries at Auckland, will be in charge of the vessel.
