NO SUNDAY TENNIS

STUDENTS AT DUNEDIN UNIVERSITY COUNCIL'S STAND (0.C.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday The Council of the University of Otago reaffirmed its attitude toward the playing of tennis by students on Sunclays, and rejected a recommendation by the Board of Control that play be allowed between the hours of 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The board, in a letter to the council, said it was making no pioneer proposal, and other colleges in New Zealand permitted Sunday tennis.

A motion by the Rev. D. C. Herron, "That the council decline to permit Sunday tennis, but is willing to receive suggestions from the Board of Control or the Students' Association as to the provision of additional courts," was carried by seven votes to four.

Mr. Herron said it seemed to him that the question of Sunday tennis and the provision of more courts were bound up together. Complaint was made that there was not enough room for all those who wished to play, and the council should, therefore, co-operate with students in providing additional facilities. An amendment moved by Dr. F. S. Batchelor, that the recommendation of the board be agreed to, was lost.
