STUDENTS' EXHIBITION

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE OPENING CEREMONY TO-DAY In spite of wartime difficulties and the enlistment of a number of senior students, the Auckland University College School of Architecture this year has assembled a very creditable exhibition of work. It will be opened in the college hall this afternoon by the president of the New Zealand institute of Architects, Mr. H. L. Massey. Two fifth-year theses for the degree of bachelor of architecture are included. One of these, by Mr. K. W. Douglas, is a design for a huge building to contain the Auckland Police and Magistrate's Courts and the central police station. The project has clearly involved an enormous amount of work, for there are hundreds of rooms in the building, which is planned to occupy the whole city block bounded by Wellesley Street East and Princes, O'Rorke and Svmonds Streets.

It is suggested that a new Supreme Court should he erected on the opposite side of O'Rorke Street, with a subway connecting the two buildings. Provision is made for two main and two auxiliary courtrooms, with offices for the magistrates and staff. The police station includes offices, cells, barracks and a large garage. The design is illustrated by many drawings and an excellent model. The subject of the other thesis, by Mr. T. F. Gillman, is a large, modern milk-powder and export butter factory suitable for a site on the_ railway at Waitoa. between Morrinsville and Te Aroha. The plans include a steampower plant. The Brick .Manufacturers' Prize this year has been won by Mr. K. C. Chung, a Chinese student from Singapore, with Mr. M. H M cKenzie second. The subject set was a self-contained house unit in a modern orphanage. In the holiday sketch competition Mr. McKenzie was first and Mr. A. V. de Lisle second. Excellent drawing and a free use of colour are noticeable in the specimens of students' work, from the first year onwa/d. As usual, the sketches are full of vigour and freshness. In addition to designs for buildings, details and interior decoration, the exhibition contains representative working drawings of earthquake-resisting construction.
