More Game Licences A substantial increase in game licences for the 1941 shooting season was reported at the Auckland Acclimatisation Society meeting last night. It was stated that 2901 had been issued, representing an increase of 354 in number and £535 in revenue. More vermin had been accounted for, the payments amounting to £539 as against £392 for the same period last year. Controlled Oranges Great disappointment has been expressed by Auckland fruiterers at the smallness of the shipment of oranges which reached the city on Saturday. One shopkeeper said there were hardly enough in the shipment to give one case to each shop. Shoppers, too, eager for the oranges after having had to go without for some weeks, have been making terse comments when they are asked to pay threepence or fourpence for what is a very ordinary orange. Power Board Advances Repayments of advances on account of installations of house-wiring, ranges, and waterheaters for the six months ended September 30, 1941, had been excellent, it was stated at yesterday's meeting of the Waitemata ElectricPower Board. Advances during this period totalled £5877, while repayments totalled £6471. Altogether, the board had advanced over £134.400 to date to its consumers for the installation of electrical apparatus, and £121,330 had been repaid. Doctors' Fees The rights of doctors to sue for fees under the Social Security Amendment Act, which operates from November 1, were outlined yesterday by the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer. "The doctor's right to sue is limited to the amount mentioned in the Act, 7s 6d for normal consultations, and 12s 6d for night or Sunday calls," Mr. Nordmeyer said. "He has no right to sue for any amount higher than this, although the patient may pay him a higher fee than 7s fid without either doctor or patient committing an oli'ence." Rescue of a Sailor The police were called on to perform an unusual duty when, with the cooperation of the manager and a Grey Lynn resident called from his bed at midnight, they rescued a naval rating from a city theatre where he had been accidentally locked in on Saturday night. The sailor went to sleep during; the performance and found himself in darkness when he awoke. With tho help of a box of matches he found a telephone and, almost with his last match, dialled a number selected at random. The explanation of his predicament was greeted with unfeeling laughter from the owner of the telephone, but it led to the sailor's release.

Boer War Contingent The first contingent of Now Zealand troops to leave for the South African War sailed from Wellington <l2 years ago to-day. They were the first to he sent from any colony and were despatched only nine days alter fighting started. They consisted of 215 of all ranks under the command of Major A. W. Robin, of Dunedin, and were nil provided with horses. It was doubted in some quarters whether the men would arrive before the war was ended, but the contingent was to he followed by 10 others, the total number of New Zealand soldiers to go to South Africa before peace was declared being more than 0000.

Auckland Factories The number of factories in New Zealand litis nearly doubled since 1911, the number in existence in 1936 having been increased by 50 per cent to 6342 last year. Figures based on the Government Statistician's findings and quoted by the Commerce .Journal show that, of the 0342 establishments, 2100 are in the Auckland Province, which also has 38.608 of the 108,722 employees engaged, and £16,319.474 out of a Dominion added value of £14.120,419. Thus the province accounts for over one-third of the figures given under each of these headings. It is stated that many factories have been started since 1938 under the influence of import licensing and war conditions.
