GOLF CONTESTS

LADIES' COMPETITIONS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SUCCESS FOR ORAKEI PLAYER The annual champion of champions golf contest between representatives of Auckland cit> and suburban ladies' clubs took place on the One Tree Hill links at Maungakiekie yesterday, and it resulted in a win for Mrs. E. Stokoe, of Orakei, who finished one stroke ahead of the runner-up, Mrs. J. S. Colegrove, of Auckland. Heavy showers during the morning and afternoon made matters a little unpleasant for the competitors, otherwise the conditions were good. %

Mrs. Stokoe's afternoon round of 78 was the feature of the day's play, as she improved upon her morning effort by no fewer man 11 strokes. She has a most unorthodox putting stance, but it stood to her well on thts occasion. On (he inward half in the second round she never took more than two putts on any green, while there were a few occasions when she sank her putt at the first" attempt Mrs. Stokoe's score, compared with bogey figures was as follows: Bogey Out: -1 o .'! 855 4 5 4—38 Mrs. btokoe—Out: 5 1 ,'{ 3 6 5 5 5 s—ll Bogey Mrs. Stokoe—ln: 4 1 2 5 4 5 4 5 4—37 Mrs. Colegrove, Mrs. Preston and Mrs. Andrew all played consistently, and the firstnamed was perhaps unfortunate in striking tile winner in such deadly putting form. These three players and Mrs. Hogan went round in 86 in the morning, Mrs. Brewer being one more. Mrs. Hogan failed to reproduce similar form in the afternoon, being frequently in trouble round trees on the fairways, while Mrs. Brewer did not return a card.

Mrs. Preston started off in the morning with a seven and then took four putts on the second green. She made a good recovery, however, but played the 17th badly. She was just short of the green with her second and hen took four more strokes to hole out. L rs ' Hogan was also unfortunate, as she hit P" the wrong tee at the 18th and then lost her ball, so that she had to play her fourth off the tee. But for this she would probably have returned the best figures for the morning. Following were the results: — . Mrs. E. Stokoe (Orakei) . . 89 7S I<>7 Mrs. J. S. Colegrove (Auck.) So 8-2 108 Mrs. F.
