OBITUARY

MR. J. L. JOHNSTONE The death has occurred of a widelyknown former resident of Fiji, Mr. J. Leslie Johnstone, aged 72, who was for more than years actively connected with tlio administration of Fiji. Born in New South Wales, Mr. Johnstone was taken at the age of four to Fiji, where his father was a planter. He received his schooling abroad, later returning to Fiji as a member of the Colonial Civil Service. He was married in 1908 to Miss Madeleine Thiele, eldest daughter of Mr. Hans Thiele, of Copenhagen. Retiring in 1920, he came to New Zealand with his family, and had lived at Manurewa since 1924. Mr. Johnstone is survived by his wife and two sons, both of whom are serving with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. A third son, Flying-Oflicer Iv. J. A. Johnstone, R.A.F., was shot down during bombing operations at Kristiansand shortly after the Germans invaded is or way.
