SENIOR "VACANCY MR. LUXFORD CHOSEN A SUCCESSFUL CAREER The appointment has been made of Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., of Wellington, as senior stipendiary magistrate in Auckland. He is expected to take up his duties about the middle of this month. Formerly a well-known member of the Auckland legal profession, Mr. Luxford nil! succeed Mr. W. R. McKean. S.M.. who retired early in July. Not only has Mr. Lu\ford had a successful career at the Bar, hut lie has also a fine war service record, and in his younger days was a prominent athlete. Born in Palmerston North in 18' JO, he was educated in Palmerston North, Dannevirke and at Wanganui Collegiate School. He was admitted to the Bar at Hamilton in 1913 and subsequently practised at To Awamutu.

In the Great War, Mr. Luxford .served with the Machine-Gun Corps in Kgypt and Fiance, and was mentioned in despatehes for gallantry at the first battle of the Somme. In 1917 he was seriously wounded, and was subsequently invalided out. of the .Army. Late in 1910 he had been promoted to the rank of major. -Mr. Luxlord resumed practice in Hamilton in 1919, but eventually moved to Auckland, where he followed his profession with the late .Mr. \V. J. Napier. Later he joined the firm of J'itchett and J?ees. He was appointed a stipendiary magistrate in 1928, and in the following year was made Chief Judge oj Western Samoa. Upon the expiry of his term there lie returned to the Dominion and sat as a magistrate in Wellington.
