LOSSES ON STATE INDUSTRY
Sir, —A few days ago I road a letter in the Herald, the writer of which challenged anyone to name a socialised industry that was not successful. I name two to start Ihe hull rolling the State Railways and Mines. In spite of its monopoly of transport, a 10 per cent increase in fares and rates, and an absolutely record volume of business, the Railway Department lost more than ill ,000.000 last year. The four State coal mines made last year a loss of 128.16(5. A group of six private enterprise mines made a total profit of I'oo.lSo, giving private enterprise a win by £8.1.051. The challenge should be the other way round; the Socialists should produce examples of successful socialised enterprises. A. \\ aiuu kton. \ga rua wahia.
