BUILDING BY-LAWS
COMPILING STANDARD COD£ FIRE PREVENTION ASPECT The hope that the section of the Standard Code of Building By-Lawg dealing with means of egress would be available to local bodies by the end of the roar was expressed yesterday by the Minister of Industries and Commerce. the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. Steps had also been taken, lie said, to expedite the competition of the fireresisting construction section. Of the 10 sections of the original Standard Model Building By-Law, said Mr. Sullivan, seven had been completely revised. Of the remaining three, that dealing with steelwork had been almost completely reviewed, and tha revision of the two other sections was in hand. Mr. Sullivan said the committees working on the various projects had early realised the total inadequacy of: the existing provisions relating to egress from buildings, fire prevention, including fire-fighting equipment and the use of fire-resisting materials in building construction. The Minister added that 48 local authorities were adopting the code. They represented more than 500.000 people, or more than two-thirds of the urban population. The general adoption of the by-laws would effect enormous savings by ensuring that specifications relating to materials, equipment. construction, installations and general procedure would satisfy tlio relevant requirements in each district.
