BUILDING ACTIVITY
SEPTEMBER TOTAL £59.772 Expenditure on building in the city area during September totalled £'•39,772, which is slightly above the monthly average for this year. Among the building permits issued by the City Council during the past month there was only one which represented a contract of any si/.o and that was for additions to a store. However, there were permits for 31 new dwellings which accounted for £35,788. So far this year building in the city has absorbed a total of £">20,739.* or £108.723 less than for the first nine months of 1940. Up to date this year 215 new dwellings have been built by private enterprise, of a total value of £301,790, compared with 233 houses of a total value of £277,089 in the January-September period of last year.
