BOXING TITLES

AUCKLAND AMATEUHS ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SEVERAL KEEN CONTESTS The annual amateur championships conducted by the Auckland Boxing Association were concluded at the Town Hall lasl evening. when a lar^ l ' attendance witnessed the semi-finals and finals. The programme was again a lensfthy u »e. commencing at T.tso p.m. and not concluding: until well after midnight. However, this was an hour earlier than the conclusion of Ihe first night's proceedings. The boxing all round was of a better standard than on tho opening night and no fewer than live special trophies were awarded to losers lor plucky exhibitions. MoKac (junior weller-weighl), A. Wilson i junior tea i her-w citjht). There was keen compel it ion lor most of the senior inks. The paper-weight was contested by two clever Hamilton lads. C. Worth, holder of both the fly.weight and bantamweight championships, had no opponent in Hie former, while be relumed the latter by beating (). A. Jackson in the final. J. Jenkins lost his feather-weight title lo E. Black, but bad his revenge over the same opponent in the light-weight. The light- and welter titles were held by 1-1. Underwood, now a professional. The welter winner was L. Salmon. W. Withey (Wlienuapui Air Base) annexed the middle-weight, while D. W. liollinson, holder of the cruiser and heavy-weight titles, lost them both. Black was inclined to wrestle and Jenkins was thrown off his fret a few times in the firs! two rounds, At the same lime Black landed some clean left and right hooks. JOE LOUIS WINS WORLD TITLE CONTEST RETIREMENT ANTICIPATED (R W I. i.:is p.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. '2O Joe Louis won the world heavy-weight boxing championship contest with Lou Nova on a. 1 eclmica 1 knock-out decision when the referee stopped the tight at the end of Hie sixth round. Louis' weight was fist G'Jb and his opponent was 1 ,lb heavier. \ftcr five rounds of deliberate stalking, Louis .amied a straight riclit on Nova's chin in the sixth that led to the technical knockout, which came one second before the end of the round Nova collapsed half-way through the ropes, but rose a! the count of nine. Louts went after him and battered him from corner to corner until tho referee intervened. According to an earlier cablegram from New York dated September 2S. friends of Joe Bonis expect lum to retire after the bout with Nova. He has been passed fit for the Army and is to go into camp within a fortnight. Louis refuses to discuss the matter. Louis lias now successfully defended his lit le, 10 times, lie was a three to one favourite in the contest with Nova. Ad mirers offered even money that Nova would still be on his feet at the end of the tenth round. Lonis is 27 years old and Nova 2G. Louis has had 55 fights during his boxing career and has been beaten only once, when he was knocked out by Max Schmeling. Experts claim that Louis retains his terrible punch, but argue that he has lost his zeal for battle. Since be defeated Billy Conn he has been harassed by domestic troubles. The promoters expected GO.GOG spectators and a £2OO 000 gate. Louis, as champion, will get, 40 per cent and Nova 20. BRITISH TITLE RETAINED LONDON. Sept,. 20 At the Albert Hall Ernie Broderiek retained the British welter-weight boxing championship by defeating Arthur Da miliar on poinla.
