PRISONER AT CORINTH AUCKLAND SERGEANT'S LETTER "It i.s just two months since I was taken prisoner and this is the fiist time 1 have been permitted to write a brief letter of 10 lines limit," states a message received by Mr. and Mrs. I'. \Y. Jaekman, of 41 Methueii Road, Avondale, from their son, Stafi-Ser-K eant Cecil Frederick .Jaekman, aged 26 who went overseas with a New /calami dental unit. Sergeant Jaekman was officially reported to be a prisoner of war at Corinth, Greece 10 days ago. In his message, posted on July o. Sergeant Jaekman said he was well and was with friends. Being a dental technician he was working at the camp hospital and was in charge of the medical inspection room. The work was pioving a blessing. ! DEATH IN GREECE TAKAPUNA BOMBARDIER Official advice of the death of her husband. Bombardier Eric Andrew Ridded, in a Greek hospital, has been received by Mrs. T. M. Riddell, of 9 Ptipuke Road, Takapuna. Bombardier Riddell died on July 19, after being posted missing and then listed among the prisoners of war after the Grecian campaign. Before enlisting shortly after the outbreak of war. Bombardier Riddell was employed by the Auckland Gas Companv. He was a keen yachtsman, and had been awarded a territorial decoration for long service. He was 29 years of age. A brother is at present serving overseas. PONSONBY SOCCER PLAYER STAND AGAINST ENEMY TANKS Further details of how Sergeant L. Mullane, the well-known Ponsonby Club and Auckland representative Soccer player, was taken prisoner in Greece have been received by his relatives in a letter from Private Watts, who had been with Sergeant Mullane. The letter states that Sergeant Mullane, who was attached to headquarters staff, answered the call for volunteers to man an anti-tank gun, and with Sergeant W. D. Adams, of Onehunga, and a number cf privates operated the gun for some time. By a strange coincidence all the privates were wounded, but the two sergeants were unscathed. After cooking a meal for the wounded gun crew and rendering first-aid during a lull in the fighting, the two sergeants ordered the crew to report hack to the base, leaving the sergeants to do their best to stop the onslaught of German tanks, which even then were massing for an attack. This was the last that the crew saw of their two comrades. MISSING IN GREECE NOW PRISONER OF WAR (0.C.) HAMILTON, Wednesday Official advice has been received by Mrs. H. L. F. Nicoll, of St. Winifred's Avenue, Hamilton, that her husband, Private H. L. F. Nicoll, aged 38, who was reported missing from Greece in Mav is now a prisoner of war. Private Nicoll left New Zealand last November. Prior to enlisting he was employed by the Hamilton Borough Council. SOLDIER PRESUMED DEAD THREE BROTHERS SERVING (0.C.) HAMILTON, Wednesday Private Alan George Johnston, son of Mr. F. Johnston of Abbotsford Street, Hamilton, who has been reported presumed dead, was educated at the Hamilton High School, and before enlisting was engaged in farming at Ngahinapouri. Corporal W. F. Johnston, a brother, was recently reported a prisoner of war in Greece, while Lieutenant I. E. Johnston, another brother, is at Waiouru with the tank corps. A third brother, Sergeant I. L. Johnston, is stationed at the Cambridge territorial camp. SERGEANT MISSING TE AWAMUTU RADIO OPERATOR (0.C.) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday Advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Haselden, of Young Street, Te Awamutu, that their eldest son, Sergeant H. C. McL. Haselden, is missing as a result of air operations on September 17. Sergeant Haselden was born at Te Awamutu and educated at the Te Awamutu District High School. He was a member of the Te Awamutu Athletic Club, the Te Awamutu Football Club and the Te Awamutu Cricket Club. He enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force on the outbreak of war and was called up and entered training school at Levin in September, 1940, He sailed for Canada with the first Now Zealanders under the Empire training scheme and graduated as a wireless operator and air-gunner. He arrived in England in June of this year and was assigned to a Wellington bomber squadron as a wireless operator.
