FLYING MEDAL
AUCKLANDER'S SUCCESS
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, Sergeant-Pilot Reginald Joseph Cowan Grant, Royal Air Force, is a eon of Mr. W. E. Grant, proprietor of the Ponsonbv Club Hotel. Aged 27. lie was born in Woodville and educated at the Mount Albert Grammar School. He was later captain of the Technical Old Boys'* senior Rugby team and was well known in amateur boxing, wrestling and swimming circles.
"He joined the Air Force before the war and, after preliminary training at Levin. New Plymouth and Blenheim, he left in January for overseas and joined a fighter squadron in May. Since then he has shot down two Messerschmitts and damaged several others, and taken part in 22 operations. A brother, Sergeant-Pilot I. A. C. Grant, is also serving with the Royal Air Force. He volunteered for service before the war and was with one of the first trained detachments to leave New Zealand.
