PATRIOTIC FUNDS
OTAHUHU RAISES £1553 A splendid response to the appeal on behalf of the Fighting Forces Fund in Otahuhu was reported at the borough council meeting last night. The Mayor. Mr. C. R. Potrie, M.P., stated that £l/553 had been raised in the borough. Mr. Petrie said the borough had aimed at raising £IOOO, which was considered a substantial sum for tho district. The response had been magnificent and represented a sum equivalent to 5s a head of the population of about 6000. There had been no major effort and the proceeds had come from a series of small efforts in which all sections of the community had helped.
MASSED BANDS AT HUNTLY OVER 3000 PEOPLE ATTEND (0.C.) HUNTLY, Monday
A successful entertainment to raise funds for the inter-zone quota required by the Iluntly Patriotic Committee was held yesterday, when nine Auckland bands visited tho town and gave a splendid display of marching at Davies Park before an attendance of over 3000 people. The bands also rendered various items during the afternoon. As a mark of respect to the memory of Mrs. Buckley, wife of Captain George Buckley, bandmaster of the Papakura Military Camp Band, who died on Saturday, the massed hands rendered a Ijymn, "Deep Harmony." Prior to the commencement of a football match at 3 p.m. the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, expressed appreciation of the fine effort. At the Town Hall in the evening the Auckland Waterside Workers' Band and concert party gave an entertaining programme to a large audience. The proceeds of the whole day amounted to over £2OO.
