£152 DAMAGES AWARDED
DEATH OF 29 CALVES (0.C.) OTOROHAXGA, Thursday Damages totalling C 152, with £ls 9s 8d costs, were awarded by Mr. . IfFreeman. S.M., in the Otorohanga Court, when J. Dempster, jun.. a farmer, of Kiokio, proceeded against (t, Gruenvald, of Hamilton, for the loss of 29 calves treated with a drench supplied by defendant. it was claimed by the plaintiff that, the preparation of the drench was faulty and that this caused the death of the calves. Within three-(|iinrters of an hour rfter the drench had heen administered. eight calves were dead. A further nine died belore evening, and a total of were dead next morning. A further six died during that day. Plaintiff said he valued the heifer calves at to a head and one bull calf at £lO 10s.
Witnesses gave evidence that the drench contained poi«ons in quantities far in excess of what was regarded as a safe dose. The defendant did not appear.
