THE HOUSING SHORTAGE
Sir. —I think "Accountant" will admit that when the Labour Government came into power there was a grave shortage of dwelling houses. For the five previous years, building material was at bedrock prices, and carpenters were walking their boots off looking tor work—why then, the shortage'? Surely this was an atmosphere ideal for private building enterprise. Governments do not undertake house building for the fun of the thing: for 25 .years or more prior to the present Government coming into power, other Governments were forced to undertake the task of trying to supply dwellings for the people. When private enterprise falls down on the job, the State has to make an effort to supply the need. Rent restrictions were in force before the present Government was eleuted. I'ktkr LOO.
