The Landing of Samuel Marsden On December 20th, 1814, the Rev. Samuel Marsden, accompanied by a worthy and high-minded chief named Ruatara and a number of white men and their families, arrived in the Bay of Islands in the brig "Active." As he stepped ashore, Marsden wa3 greeted by a band of tattooed chiefs, who then performed a characteristic _.>* war dance. Four days later, on Christmas Day, 1814, the Rev. Samuel Marsden conducted the first service in the Christian religion to be held -in New Zealand.
