UNUSUAL RUGBY INCIDENT The success which has attended its two carnivals this season is very encouraging to the Auckland Boxing A.inociation, as well sis being of financial assistance to the patriotic funds. A raffle for a gold watch helped to swell the proceeds on Monday night. It was drawn on the stage and there was cheering and applause as a member of the crew of a warship climbed into the ring to display the winning ticket.

There was an unusual incident In connection with a senior Rugby championship match in Wellington between Eastbourne and Wellington. Tne Eastbourne centre broke right away, with his winger in support. Nearing the goal-line the centre sold a perfect dummy to score a fine try. The wing-threequarter had stepped into touch and the line umpire, evidently watching the winger, had failed to notice the dummy, and raised his Hag. The referee ordered a line-out, which was an injustice to Eastbourne. It should be a lesson to linesmen to keep their eyes on the ball.

News that E. D. Andrews, former New Zealand tennis champion and Davis Cup Player, occupies an important post in the British Ministry of Supply is contained in a letter from Andrews received by Mr. J. N. Lowry, of Okawa, Ttawke's Bay. Andrews savs 'he lately received a gratifying promotion and is now assistant financial advisor to the Ministry. Andrews is a partner in a firm of London stockbrokers with membership on the London fltock Exchange. The writer states that he recently had the opportunity for his first game of tennis for a lontj time. He plaved Eric Peters (English Davjs Cup representative) at the All-Englnnd Club's courts at, Wimbledon, beating him r—7, B—o, ft t The Wimbledon courts, he adds, are in good order and are being well maintained, although not in use for competition purposes. The buildings .accommodate the Red Cross and are Used as an air raid depot.
