BOOT AND SHOE PRICES
INCREASE IN AUSTRALIA CANBERRA, July 2 Tho makers' selling prices of boots and shoes were increased by 5 per cent to-day by the Prices Commissioner, Professor Copland. Retailers will not be allowed to increase prices until old stocks have been sold. Higher costs of production, notably in wages and materials, were given as reasons for the increase.
Since August, 1939, increases m wholesale prices have totalled 17 per cent £or leather boots and shoes, and 19 per cent for kid boots and shoes, and 19$ per cent for slippers. Increases of from two to three per cent in leather prices have been approved also, because of the increased cost of, tanning materials and higher wages.
