GENERAL WAVELL

Sir, —Evidently there has been dirty work at the political crossroads in the transfer of General Wavell to India. To imply as is being dono by certain interests that General Wavell was responsible in any way for the setbacks in Gyrenaica and Greece is a libel on a loyal and brilliant leader and quite at variance with his former strategy and operations. I suggest that he gave a reluctant consent to the expedition to Greece under heavy political pressure and when the result proved that the attempt to hold up the Germans was hopeless, as he had anticipated, he refused to send any more of his forces to bo needlessly sacrificed and thus got into disfavour with the political strategists who are now venting their spleen on a brave and independent soldier.

Tho excuse that ho was overburdened and required a rest is mere flapdoodle. If a member of tho War Cabinet can now be sent to take over some of tho responsibilities why could he not have been sent before? It looks as if General Wavell was so competent a man that it takes three others to fill his position. I may say that many others here are of the same opinion as myself. w. D. McLean.
