GOLFERS' EFFORTS

PATRIOTIC TOURNEYS LARGE AMOUNTS RECEIVED EVENTS HELD IN AUCKLAND The amount of money being raised by golf clubs in Auckland for patriotic purposes is gradually increasing. The Titirangi Club's effort during the past few days, culminating in the exhibition matches on Sunday between A. Murray and 11. D. Brinsden, of Auckland, and J. P. Hornnbrook and J. Jeffery, of New Plymouth, is expected to add a sum of something like £SOO to that already contributed by golfers. In addition to the auctioning of various articles after the exhibition games, the Titiraogri Club conducted an art union, and the exact proceeds from this will not be known until the books are all returned from the various clubs among which they were circulated.

The amount realised by the auction was £"212, which was a splendid response for the 25 articles submitted. The top price of £25 was received for a Harry Vardon putter, but boxes of balls, crystal vases and other articles were readily bid for, and put up again for auction. Another fine effort was that of the motor trades, whose recent golf day at Akarana realised approximately £225, this being coinprised of entry fees, prize money and the result of auction sales and a mock court. A collection of £SO was made on the Akarana Club's course recently, when P. G. P. Smith and 1?. Gladding defeated A. Murray and H. D. Brinsden, and the proceeds of the annual winter championship conducted by the club were also handed to the patriotic funds. In addition to these efforts, the various clubs have run tournaments for patriotic purposes, ag well as for the provision of parcels and comforts for their members. The amount gathered in the latter direction has already reached £2OO in at least one instance.
