BRITISH IMPORTS

GOODS FOR TRANS-SHIPMENT LICENCE NOW REQUIRED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Friday The acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, stated to-day that advice had been received from the United Kingdom that as from July 1 the importation of goods into the United Kingdom for trans-shipment will be subject to control. Hitherto there has been no such restriction on the use of inward shipping space to Britain, but it has now been found necessary to institute strict control. Shippers are advised that application should be made to the United Kingdom authorities for licences to import goods into Britain for trans-ship-ment before arrangements are made for shipping the goods. Failure to observe this may result in serious disappointments and losses. However, licences will not be required for goods despatched before July 15. or for goods remaining on board or for ships' stores. An endeavour will be made to avoid unnecessary interference with the export trade, especially if alternative routes avoiding Britain can be used. Mr. Nash said the volume of New Zealand export trade involving transshipment in Britain was not large, and it was not anticipated that New Zealand exporters would suffer any inconvenience in the early stages of the scheme. In future, permits to export goods from New Zealand which would require to. be trans-shipped in the United Kingdom would not be granted unless evidence was produced that a licence would be granted by the United Kingdom authorities for subsequent trans-shipment.
