FOOTBALLERS MISSING
RUGBY AND LEAGUE PLAYERS Sergeant D. J. Stott, youngest son of Mr. R. E. Stott, of Birkenhead, has been reported missing. He is well known in sporting circles, having played fullback for the Grammar Old Boys senior Rushy team for a couple of seasons. He was also a useful cricketer, being a member of the Birkdale Club. Educated at the Northcote District High School and Takapuna Grammar School, Stott was employed in tho New Zealand Herald Office at the time of his enlistment. Advice has been received in Auckland that J. J. Campbell and I. G. Stirling, two poiminent members of tho New Zealand Rugby League team which toured England in 1939, arc reported missing from operations ip the Middle East. Both players left New Zealand with tho same unit, and were associated in N"ew Zealand Army games played in England. Campbell was a fine threeqnarter and playf'd with the Ponsonby Lea Rue Club in 1935, and last season represented Canterbury and the South Island. Stirling played with North Shore and gave some fine displays at halfback in 1039. He made a good impression in England with the military teams. A letter received in Auckland a few days ago stated that both Campbell and Stirling fought together in Greece and on one occasion were with Lieutenant R. K. King, the New Zealand Rtisby League captain, who was wounded a few days later.
