CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY
SECOND CONCERT PRESENTED Vivid contrasts in the development of music were ..shown in the well-chosen programme which was presented by the Auckland Chamber Music Socio tv at its second concert in the Lewis Kady Hall last, night. The artists were Misses Mary Martin (violin), Freda W' a His (viola), Messrs. Victor Le Pot tit; ('cello), Hal MacLennan (flute) and Owen Jensen (piano).
The programme commenced with Haydn's Trio No. L' 3 in F Major, for violin, piano and 'cello, and which was remarkable for the splendid control of volume and the strict co-operation of the performers Some of the nassages by the violin were especially well plaved and the whole, witli the definite nnd clean-cut ininuetto, formed a refreshing portion of the evening. Mavdn's work was followed bv Trio Opus Hfi in K Flat Major by Hummel, and here again the performers produced a pleasing measure of sympathy and control. The exacting; piano accompaniment- was finely executed by Mr. Jensen and the graceful second movement was concluded with a particularly fine retard. Perhaps the best number of the evening was an admirable presentation of Sonata No. fl. for violin and piano, bv Frederick Oclius. This work came as a direct contrast- to its predecessors, being distinctly modern in form. The easy flow of the charming second movement was only equalled in execution by the moving climax in the last. The whole of the difficult composition was performed by Miss Martin with understanding and precision. The programme was concluded by Quintet in G Major, by Hermann Sandhy.
