LOCAL BODIES' PROTEST <O.C.) HAMILTON, Wednesday A remit from the Lake County Council that a protest ho made against tho observance of the 40-hour week in wartime was considered by tho Central Waikato Electric-Power Board to-day. in moving that the letter be received, Mr. R, G. Young said tho South Island farmers were 20 years behind the times. Industrial progress in the North Island was such that the 40-hour week could be observed without detriment. Exception could bo permitted in special cases by tho Government.

Mr. F. L. Onion said that with the withdrawal of manpower into the Army those remaining would have to work longer hours or not do tho work at all. Mr. Young's motion was defeated, and it was decided to support the protest against the 40-hour week.
