£2,862,000 DECREASE

FIGURES FOR APRIL £505,000 FALL IN IMPORTS A decrease of £2,802.000 in the value of exports compared with the figure for th.j corresponding month last year is shown by the preliminary return of overseas trade for April, issued by the Customs Department in Wellington yesterday. Imports were lower also, the fall in this instance being £505,000. Following is a comparison of the returns for April in the past five years:

Exports for the first ten months ol the production year, ending June 30, were £2/159 000 more than in the same portion of the preceding season. The figure is the highest for,the past five years, being £605,000 greater than the nearest comparable total, that for ten months in 1936-37. Though imports were £1,344,000 higher than for the corresponding period last season, their value is the second lowest in five years, while the commodity balance, at C1C.843.000. is the greatest during that period. The figures for the ten months compared with in the four previous seasons are:- —
