MAORIS OUTPLAYED WIN FOR SOUTH AUCKLAND MARGIN OF 11 POINTS Superior teamwork and more rugged play liv tlie forwards influenced the victory of South Auckland against the Maoris in a special H uttliy League challenge match played at t'arlaw I'aik yesterday afternoon. The visitors nun hv _':.t points t<, land were definitely the better team. Throughout the first half South Auckland played excellent football, and at half-time led by 10 points to 7. A largo crowd witnessed the game and the football was of a good standard. The visitors' forwards made u good impression. Brook, the hooker, a former North Island representative, was successful in most of tin scrums, and the hacks did excellent work on attack. The inside backs, Connolly, at halfback, and Deverall and Dempsey, five-eighths, combined well, repeatedly beating the local team with good combination. Dempsey, who has had English club experience, playod a fine game and was well supported by Deverall at five-eighths. The visitors' back play was always impressive. Beadle, who visited England with the Now Zealand team in 1930 as a forward, put in some good wor% or the wing, but lie would have brm moro effective as a third-row forward. Among the forwards Gunn, Moyes and McGilp playe.l excellent games. Minhinnick did good work in the loose and G, Stevens was also prominent. Outstanding in the Maori team was Butler, on the wing, who played a splendid game and was in many movements. Murray and Hemi, at five-eighths, also played good games. Chase, at halfback, was out of his position, but made few mistakes. \V. Martin and Iliriiiui wero the pick of the forwards. Martin was unlucky not to scoro a runaway try. He went ovor the line, but also crossed the "dead ball" lino. Tristram also played a good game, but generally the Maori forwards were beaten by a superior set. For South Auckland. Connolly scored two tries and Brook one. Moyes converted two tries and kicked three penalty goals. Stevens kicked two penalty goals. For the Maoris, •Ririnui and Butler scored a try each. Hemi converted one try and kicked two penalty goals. Mr G. Kelly was referee.
