HOCKEY TOURNEY

UNIVERSITY TEAMS PLAY COMMENCING TO-DAY MATCHES AT HOBSON PARK The annual hockey tournament of New Zealand University Colleges will commence in Auckland to-day and will be continued until Saturday, when New Zealand University teams will play Auckland representative sides. The teams from the southern colleges will arrive in Auckland this morning l>y the early express and will be billeted by the Auckland players and supporters. A coffee evening will be held at the Auckland University Hall tonight, followed by a picture entertainment, and the annual tournament ball will be held at the hull on Friday evening. The Seddon Stick, which is the trophy won by the champion team each year in the men's section, is at present held by Massey College, Palmerston North, which will be defending it. Included in the men's teams are several players who have represented their respective provinces, and a high standard should be witnessed. In the women's section Otago and Canterbury, present joint holders of the Reeves Stick, will compete with two Auckland teams for the honours. Some prominent players will be taking part in the games, Canterbury fielding a particularly strong combination. Mrs. B. Boyd, captain of Canterbury, and a New Zealand Blue, appeared at centre-half with the Canterbury provincial team at last year's Dominion tournament. Confidence will be given the team with Miss I. Orchard, also a blue, playing soundly as left fullback. A fast forward line is supported by Mrs. E. Farmer, on the wing, while Miss N. Orchard, at centre-forward, i.s fast and has perfect- ball control. Otago will be fielding a team strengthened by three New Zealand blues, the captain, Miss F. Malcolm, being a speedy wing-forward whose stiekwork won her a place in the representative team. The half-line will be'supported by Miss M. liohan, a player of keen interception and anticipation. Auckland will field two teams composed of many young players, who should profit considerably by tournament experience. New Zealand blues participating are Miss D.
