LATE LORD LIVERPOOL
FORMER GOVERNOR-GENERAL
KEEN INTEREST IN DOMINION Governor and Governor-General of New Zealand for a period that covered the whole of the last war, the Earl of Liverpool, whose death has been announced from London, was His Majesty's representative in New Zealand when Dominion status was gained in 1917. Ho was Governor from 1912 to 1917, and Governor-General from 1917 to 1920, when he was succeeded by I/Ord Jellieoe.
Lord Liverpool's father had even earlier associations with New Zealand. As a midshipman in the gunboat Cnraeoa he fought through part of the Waiknto War, including tho siege of Rangiriri. Lord Liverpool himself saw service alongside New Zealanders in the South African War. Before hp came to New Zealand, Lord Liverpool had been Comptroller of the Lord Steward's Department of Buckingham Palace, and in 1907 took his seat in the House of Lords as a Liberal. Shortlv before his departure for New Zealand he was appointed to assist the Chief Whip. After his return to England from New Zealand. Lord Liverpool retired to his estates in Lincolnshire, although he continued an active interest in the Dominion's welfare. He once revisited New Zealand, making a tour of both islands in 1929.
