MINISTER PROMOTED

MR. SPENDER'S COMMISSION SYDNEY, May 17 The promotion of Captain P. C. Spender to be lieutenant-colonel (temporary) as from April 26 was announced in the Commonwealth Gazette a few days ago, in a notice signed "Percy C. Spender, Minister for the Army." The Minister for the Army would not comment upon the promotion when interviewed. Lieutenant-Colonel Spender, however, said that ho had not. worn a military uniform for some time, and did not propose to wear one now. Friends of Lieutenant-Colonel Spender revealed that, after some years on the active list of the Australian Army legal department attached to the Eastern Command, he been transferred to the reserve of officers. There had been a large number of promotions in the army legal department recently, and it is understood that LieutenantColonel Spender's promotion follows the ordinary course of events and preserves his seniority.
