SERVICE TO AUCKLAND
FRIEND OF LONG STANDING
Auckland's new Mayoress, .Mrs. J. A. C Allum, docs not come to her new position a.s a stranger to the women of the city, hut rather as a friend of long standing. For a long period of years Mrs. Allum has been a quiet but. capable worker for a number of organisations in which she has been specially interested, notably the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement ami, more recently, the patriotic work of the women'.; activities sub-committee of the local metropolitan organis at i on. .Mrs. Allum lias been secretary of the patriotic sub-coniniitt.ec since its inception and lias taken a keen and active interest in its work and also in the work of one of its branches, Ponsonby, of which she is vice-president. The Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement is one which has always had Mrs Alliums active support and she was oil the committee of the JJerne Bay troops at. their inception, in addition to being the first president of the Heme Ba\ girl guide troop. She was also a member of the board of directors of the Auckland Y.W.O.A. for a period. Mrs. Allum's services to the community were officially recognised when she was appointed a justice of the peace in I!>.'S7. .Mrs. Allum has been a resident ol Rente Bay for very many years and her home, "The Lindens,'' in C'urrati Street, is well known. Mr. and Mrs. Allum have three daughters, and one son, who is serving with the Expeditionary Force. They are members of St. Stephen's I'resbvterian Church, Heme Bay.
